Addressing Health Literacy in Diabetes Care and Prevention

This series meets weekly on Thursdays from 12:00 - 1:00 PM MT for four weeks. No session May 18.


This ECHO series creates a virtual space where primary care providers, health professionals and specialists can collaborate to gain skills and understanding regarding how to address health literacy to improve the patient experience and outcomes for individuals with diabetes. The four-session series will provide practical information related to the current literature and basic health literacy practices, and tools that can be used to measure a patient's health literacy. It will also address how health literacy can impact patient outcomes. Learn from experts in the field about incorporating these tools into your practice in order to gain confidence and improve care for your patients.


  • List risk factors for low health literacy.
  • Describe how low health literacy can impact the patient and their health outcomes.
  • Summarize how to use existing tools and resources to assess for health literacy, numeracy and digital health literacy.
  • Discuss best practices for addressing health literacy through clear health communication.
